UKSGA @ Hockley Golf Club/ Mark Gershinson Triumphs

This week the UK SGA tour held its fifth event of the 2025 season at Hockley GC on 19/20 May. Excellent weather, albeit a bit windy on the first day, with a warm welcome from the host club made for a greatly enjoyed event on UKSGA’s first visit to this venue. Turnout for this event was a total of 86 players.

Hockley Golf Club, located near Twyford just to the south of the ancient city of Winchester, describes itself as the leading downland course in Hampshire. The golf club has stood on top of the South Downs for over 100 years, celebrating its centenary in 2014. It is set on chalk downland with excellent drainage, permitting year round golf. This James Braid designed course is blessed with stunning views and offers a marvellous challenge for all golfers.

And so to the roll of honour –

In the main tournament Mark Gershinson (Hartsbourne CC) recorded an excellent aggregate score of +2 narrowly edging out Les Bruckner (Hindhead GC) by one shot. George Wilson (Calcot Park GC) and Mike White (West Wilts GC) came in 3rd and 4th respectively trailing by two shots on our winner.

In the Super Seniors Les Bruckner came out top by dint of his aggregate 3 over score and one ahead of George Wilson.

In the Masters event David Pattrick (Royal Cromer GC) headed the final list two shots ahead of Neil Franklin (Beaconsfield GC) and three shots better than Ian Foster (Bishops Storford GC)

Martin Lee (Frilford Heath GC was the leader in a small ESGA Masters 75+ field.

The winner of the best nett 36 H and main reason the PCC was unmoved was Duncan Thomas (Temple GC) with 2 excellent scores of 67+68

Well done to all our winners and close calls. All scores and breakdown are available for personal research via the association website.

ur most memorable moments from Hockley GC? There were no aces so forget that highlight. But many Twos including Julian Brand at the 1st and Martin Slumbers at the 7th!

But what about those first four uphill holes into the wind and the treacherous downhill 18th where your ball could end up anywhere! The assistant in the pro shop suggested they were somewhere between “Heaven and Hell” – well said young man!

And finally a huge thankyou to Peter Dawson President of Hockley Golf Club for presenting the Prizes to our winners.
