Stowmarket offered another very warm welcome to the UKSGA for the 12th event of the season. And the wind was to test everyone on the Suffolk parkland track on both days.
Round one was to provide the round of the event as Newmarket's John Yuill shot a two over 71 to take the lead and put himself firmly in the final group for round two. His round included two birdies on the front 9 and a one over par back 9 - another very strong round from John as his form continues. Three shots behind him sat four players on 74 including the winner of the previous event at St Pierre - Stewart Dalgarno (The Wychwood) threatening to pull off back to back victories.
The wind didn't relent on day two. It was Sean Dolton (Chelmsford) who proved best to handle the conditions as his second round 73 was enough to snatch victory from his Chelmsford clubmate Paul Wilkinson. But Sean's heart must have missed a beat as his tee shot found the water on the 18th hole to card a double bogey. Fortunately, with 4 birdies tucked away earlier in the round, his 148 total proved enough for the Gold medal with Paul taking the Silver just one shot further back.
Bronze medal went on countback to Malcolm Cawte with a 150 total.
Super Senior's section was a very tight affair with 4 players all within a shot but crystal winner was David Price for his 151 total following a strong 75 in round two.
Masters winner was a much clearer result as John Youil (Newmarket) had taken such a strong grip of the lead in round one. Despite slipping back to an 80 on round two John was to hang on for a comprehensive 5 shot victory.
Robert Walker top scored OOM points in the over 75 category with two rounds in the 70's.
Big thanks to Stowmarket who were excellent hosts in every way - and yes the scotch eggs were amazing. Next up from Suffolk - a trip up the M1 to Stanton-on the-Wolds.
