Ian Attoe proved his return to excellent form this week by taking first place at UKSGA Ashridge. His two rounds of 68 (136) showed that even when others found some of the greens tricky, a precise shot into the pin made a single putt an easy task. Les Bruckner took second place with 145 and third went to David Price (147) on countback from Peter Laughlin (also 147) who nonetheless claimed the Seniors’ prize. Other winners were Tony Patterson (150) Super Seniors, Neil Hughes (157) Masters and Michael Lawson (140 nett) Handicap. Very well done to all prize winners!
Ashridge is beautiful and, with the central position of the clubhouse providing an excellent viewpoint of several greens and tees, is a great venue. The free roaming deer in the early morning and evening are another delight although the greenkeepers may not agree given the endless re-raking of bunkers and the necessary repair of hoofmarks. The recent heavy rainfall had caused some of the greens to be too receptive for some, especially on the second day, and the strong winds made this event a true test. Nevertheless, the competitors expressed their admiration of this demanding course.
Many thanks are due to all staff and members of Ashridge GC for their support over the two days and our use of the course and facilities.
